For various reasons, the publication of Issue No. 10 has been suspended, and I want to take this opportunity to apologize to those looking forward to its publication.
In the meantime, members of “5” have continued various projects including the website and Radio5.

INSTeM, which began with the encounter between Osamu Sakura and Yanghyun Chun, is a nexus that bridges different fields and disciplines and sits somewhere between academia and society.
In fact, the original goals and activities of “5” serve as a foundation for the creation of INSTeM.
The editorial board of the magazine “5” has been in discussion since late 2021, and has decided to start a new phase of “5: Designing Media Ecology” as a magazine of INSTeM.
The magazine will maintain its original name and will begin its new chapter within the nexus of INSTeM, a foundation created in the same spirit as that of magazine “5”.

『5：Designing Media Ecology』第２期スタートについて

2014年に7名の仲間が7万円を出し合って創刊した、バイリンガルのリトルマガジン『5: Designing Media Ecology』。
その後、1年に2回出版し、徐々に発行部数を増やしながら、2018年12月までに9号を出すことができました。
ここまで続けてくることができたのは、ひとえに読者、寄稿者のみなさまのおかげだと思っています。
編集部を代表して、心より感謝申し上げます。
どうもありがとうございました。

その後、諸般の事情で出版の間隔が空いてしまいました。
楽しみにして下さっていたみなさんに、この場を借りてお詫び申し上げます。
ただその間も、『5』の仲間たちはウェブサイトをつくったり、Radio5の運営をしてきました。

佐倉統さんと千良鉉さんの出会いから始まったINSTeMは、異なる領域や分野を橋渡しし、アカデミアと社会の中間に位置するようなネクサスです。
その発想の根本には、プロジェクトとしての『5』がありました。
『５』編集部は、2021年後半から話し合い、この度、『5: Designing Media Ecology』の第２期の活動を、INSTeMの雑誌としてスタートすることにしました。
一般財団法人INSTeMの出す雑誌の名前が、『5』ということになります。
『5』を土台として生まれたINSTeMで、『5』が新たに出発するというわけです。

ABSTRACT

In this seminar, Professor Eva Tsai of the National Taiwan Normal University will introduce her project which explores the rising podcast scene in Taiwan from the perspective of the creative economy as well as the more integrative context of sound media culture. While the recent podcast boom in Taiwan served as a trigger for her project, the core concerns of media innovation — why do people create a podcast, and with what purposes, obligations, and conditions of working — came from her three-year involvement in Hoping Lab, the digital media lab at her university (see the links below).

In this presentation, Professor Tsai, a collaborator of Professor Shin Mizukoshi’s audio media literacy project funded by the Humanities Center, will juxtapose and contrast Taiwan’s current booming podcast scene her experiences in podcast making, teaching, and lab management. This will help to illustrate some different impetuses behind podcast development. She will then propose three approaches toward studying podcasting in Taiwan/Asia. First, platform capitalism and the persisting media and cultural industries compete to create a certain space for the podcast market and professionalization. Second, the discourse of the creative economy in neoliberal Asia partially explains why the young and the enterprising are drawn to the podcast as a new item of sociality and cultural investment. Finally, cultural and media theorizations of radio, audio, and sounds in local contexts could inform us about the diverse potential of podcasts as a medium.

この研究会では台湾のポップカルチャー研究、音声メディア実践研究の第一人者である國立台湾師範大学の蔡如音(Eva Tsai)教授に、台湾のポッドキャスト人気とその背景について伺い、東アジアにおける音声メディア文化研究と実践をめぐる議論を深めたいと思います。

Love and Like, the Road to Otaku Culture Ph.D.

Here is the Radio 5 Talks of Ms.Gift, Dr. Rujirat Vinitphol Ishikawa of Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo.

In May 2020, She got the Ph.D. of Interdisciplinary Information Studies, University of Tokyo, by her dissertation Niconico Utaite: Platformization of the Creative Culture in Japanese Social Media. She is the first Ph.D. holder from Thailand in media and communication studies at the University of Tokyo.

In this interview, she showed her road to the doctor of Otaku culture and gave us precious advice to do academic research on our most lovable matter.

今回のRadio 5 Talksは、2020年5月に『ニコニコ動画の歌い手：日本のソーシャルメディアにおける創作文化のプラットフォーム化』で博士号（学際情報学、東京大学）を取得した通称ギフトさん、ルジラット・ヴィニットポンさんにお話を伺いました。

タイでの子供時代から日本のポピュラー文化、オタク文化へ親しみ、自ら創作実践を続けてきたギフトさんのこれまでの人生と、自分が好きなことを分析的に研究する秘訣を語ってもらいました。
