After three months extention of publication, finally, the editorial office of 5: Designing Media Ecology is delighted to announce that the eighth issue will be published on Friday March 9th, 2018.

The special feature is Toward a New Media Theory.

How is it possible to articulate a theory of media in the digital age? We are in an era when the identity of media itself is undergoing qualitative transformation.
In this special feature, Yoshitaka Mōri curates new approaches to media researches, those based on media as praxis and underpinned by a newe meta-disciplinary perspective.

The editorial office of 5: Designing Media Ecology is happy to announce that the seventh issue will be published on Thursday June 15, 2017.

The special feature of this issue is What’s Your Next Move?

The media bombards us with snapshots of rising populism, widening economic divides, the ever-present threat of terrorism and so on.
Academic study and journalism provide us with endless explanations and causal relationships.
Now the challenge is to deal with the critical situations we find ourselves mired in. What we need is the practical  application of specialist knowledge and a design-oriented mindset.

For this issue we have called upon people in a variety of fields around the world to address the question, “What is your next move?”
On the fourth year of the little magazine, the editorial office is conscious of the gravity, necessity, and urgency of this special feature.

日ごろから『５：Designing Media Ecology』を応援いただき、まことにありがとうございます。
『５』編集室では、2017年6月15日（木）に第7号を発売することとなりました。

今回の特集テーマは「次の一手はなにか」。

ポスト・トゥルースの時代が到来した、世の中にはフェイクニュースがあふれている、と言われます。ポピュリズムが蔓延し、経済格差が拡大し、テロが頻発するなかで、僕たちがそのように納得してしまうのは無理のないことかもしれません。

世界がなぜこうなってしまったかの分析研究は数多いですが、この状況にいかに関わっていけばいいかについては、議論が尽くされているとはいえません。そのためには実践知とデザインへの意志が必要となってくるはずです。

そこで本号では、内外のさまざまな領域の人々に、この状況に対する「次の一手はなにか」を尋ね、ご回答いただきました。
４年目を迎えた小誌が送る、いわば緊急特集です。

人類は地球環境に大きな影響を与えており、いまや地質時代としてそのことを示す新しい時代区分が必要だと言われています。
「人類による新しい時代」を意味する用語がアンスロポセンです。

この言葉を鵜呑みにしたり礼賛するのではなく、文化研究、メディア研究、環境思想など多様な立場から批判的に検討することが、特集の目的です。

First, it will appear at the research meeting about the cultural industry （「文化産業論」を問い直す ―カルチュラル・スタディーズからクリエイティブ産業論まで」） in the evening of Friday June 12 at the Campus Plaza Kyoto, hosted by Mariko Murata lab of the Kansai University and Yutaka Iida lab of the Ritsumeikan University. 

Shinji Oyama, one of the contributors to 5 and its designer Masako Miyata will be on the stage. 

Then, the third issue will be on sale at the Cultural Typhoon 2015, and the Japan Society for Studies in Journalism and Mass Communication（日本マス・コミュニケーション学会）, both on Saturday June 13 and Sunday 14, 2015.
